I only move 3000 miles at a time, or nowhere at all. My name is Vanessa Elizabeth and I’m an Indian-looking Mexican who speaks Chinese, badly, and has yet to find a permanent “home.” Cali grown and Boston educated, I’ve traveled to 36 states in American and it’s just not for me. While surrounded by friends and family stateside, I struggle to find excitement in a typical 9-5 job and have ventured onwards in search of adventure, treasure, and a final resting place for my wandering mind. I graduated from Boston College in 2013 with a BA in English and a minor in Studio Art. Within the last two years, I’ve taught myself how Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, web development, Chinese, and how to monetize a blog.
Not bad for a 23 year-old, right?
I always have a million things on my plate. As of now, I am based in Beijing doing business development full-time for a luxury spa and retreat. I study Chinese for four hours a day at a Chinese Business university 5 times a week. And for extra cash, I do travel and health consulting all over Asia and produce, write, and develop my blog-all on my own. It’s tough, but nothing worth doing is easy. I don’t shop, drink, or party-much-so all of my finances go straight into tuition or traveling. In the near future, I’m moving back to California for a few months before I take off to England to do a Masters in Economics. My dream is to make sustainability “trendy” and cool in developing nations (such as China) and with my graphics and advertising background, I want to focus on Chinese and understanding the market now. While I may sound confident and decisive, I’m scared out of my mind. But bravery isn’t about a lack of fear, but rather, committing to the plan even if it’s hard. I created Wander Onwards as a personal outlet for my struggles, ideas, and observations and now it’s developed into a resource for others to do something similar. There is no such thing as a perfect plan. Relish in the free fall and if you hit the ground, get up, and wander onwards.
Doing awesome stuff is expensive! Even with working full-time, most of my travel/spending cash is absorbed by rising tuition costs. Want to see more of the world through my eyes?
